A Fiction
Ivan was packing his gear from his locker. It was mid April and true to New Jersey weather, it had been raining for the previous three days. This was one of the busiest times at the 100 Deuce since most pugs would rather be indoors working out than doing any sort of roadwork on the rainy streets of this industrial town. Jay wondered why Ivan seemed to be on the move on a day he should have been working with some of his regular guys. Jay was one of those regulars that relied on Ivan to waive the punch mitts around, hold the heavy bag and coach him through sparing sessions.
“What gives Bro.”
Not trying to be dismissive, Ivan looked up at Jay and said “Am heading home to pack my clothes.”
“Did you quit or something?” Jay asked.
“No. Not quitting. Am driving to some shiit town in Texas tomorrow morning. Leaving at seven AM.”
“What da hell for?” Jay pressed.
“Some cowboys are having an unsanctioned fight at a ranch near Dallas. It’s a winner take-all with a five-thousand dollar pot. I need the money, man, and I know I can kick the crap out of those rodeo jockeys down there.”
