Cats are the most popular pets worldwide. They have been companions to humans for the last 100,000 years, and today they number approximately 96 million in the U.S. alone. This is unsurprising as, throughout history, cats have held god and goddess status in ancient Egypt and were considered food supply protectors by Roman soldiers who wanted to keep rats at bay.
Cats are more popular pets than dogs, outnumbering them by 4 million in the U.S. This year, American consumers are expected to spend some $20 billion on cat food, not including treats, vet visits, toys, and other accessories.
Some of the main reasons for the popularity of cats over dogs are their relative independence, maintenance ease, and low cost to keep. While dog owners spend an average of $240 a month caring for them, cats cost their owners a mere $161.
